Samba

The Samba originated in Brazil, where the Portuguese imported slaves from the African regions of Angola and the Congo.  The dances of the African Slaves and the indigenous Brazilian peoples resulted in a dance form that appealed to the higher echelons of  society.  As a result, the Samba was transferred into closed dance frame and, after a few more evolutions, was introduced into America and Europe.  Samba performances by such celebrities as Fred Astaire + Ginger Rogers, Carmen Miranda and Princess Margaret solidified the domestication of the dance and it was eventually welcomed into the Ballroom community.

Some signature steps of Samba include:  Samba Rolls, the bota fogo, and volta movements.

Competitively, Samba is only danced as a member of the  International Latin American style of dancing.
