Jive

The jive is originated in America in the late 1800s.  It is said that African Americans borrowed it from the Native Americans of the Southeast USA.  The dance was done competitively among the African Americans, the prize being a piece of Cake.  As a result, the dance became known as the Cakewalk.  The Cakewalk eventually involved into Ragtime.  In the 1920s, Ragtime involved into Swing Dance.  Over the years, the dance was influenced by the Charleston, the jitterbug, and the foxtrot.  When jazz music became popular the steps of the dance were altered to fit the new music . The resulting dance form was known as the Lindy Hop.   Through various channels the Lindy Hop evolved into modern day jive.

In competition, the Jive is only danced in International Latin American style of dance.  However, the Jive's cousin (Swing) is danced in the American Rhythm style of dance.
